31.12.07 New Years Eve Fishing Report!

Constantly over eating and at the tail end of Christmas it was about time to get outside and do some fishing. The weather was favorable; clear skies, calm and sunshine. We decided to test the long line again close to Dolmsundet Marina. We baited 50 hooks with herring and dropped the long line east of the marina. Afterwards we went inside and prepared our evening dinner turkey.

A couple of hours later just before sunset we went to pull up the long line. Einar pulled in hook after hook and no fish! We were wondering about the no fish scenario had something to do with the presence of a certain photographer. I thought it was very strange that we’re not catching any fish. The fish finder is beeping frequently and we’re watching larger shadows swim across the screen.

I was ready with my camera and we pulled in 2/3 of the long line and no fish! I began to worry, but suddenly the line tightened and Einar grabbed the hooker. “Yeah, we got something.” I was hanging over the railing with my camera and I could see something big and shiny slowly coming up from the deep. Wow, no it is starting to look like something. It’s a monster cod that is barley hooked. Einar catches the fish with the hooker and swings it over the railing. The monster cod wiggles feverishly and Einar almost looses the the fish, luckily it falls in the gaff hook with a big sounding thud. It is a monster cod that weighs in at 10 kilos!

We continued to pull in the line and we caught 4 more cods in the 3-5 kilo weight range. After all it’s not such a bad catch. We agree that a slight adjustment to our long line placement is needed for a larger catch. It looks like 2008 will be great fishing season. The cod has arrived early this year and it is big, fat and beautiful. It is filled with roe and milky white liver. Winter fishing has begun and the moster cod is back to spawn in Dolmsundet.
